It's Never the Batteries: Challenges in Lighting Controls
“It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.” Here in the dog days of summer, I am reminded of that old phrase about humidity being the true source of discomfort, not the heat. I might sound a little lame talking about the weather, but since I got my first pair of bifocals this week at the age of 42, I think I’m allowed to crack an old man joke or two.
Let’s take that old phrase and apply it to lighting controls. “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” turns into, “it’s not the batteries, it’s the [blank]”

Lightfair Innovation Awards 2020
Congratulations to Kuzco Contract, Lightheaded Lighting and Maxlite for winning Lightfair Innovation Awards this year. Kuzco took home three awards, including Most Innovative Product of the Year for the Magellan.
Lightfair recognized the fixture for it's groundbreaking design and elegant appearance - highlighting the eye-catching but soft qualities that set the fixture apart.
"The Magellan from Kuzco Lighting fills contemporary space with elegance, and pure, concentric form. Multiple shades surround a hollow center in a static orbit, creating a soft, floral effect that invites the eye to navigate the fixture’s contoured repetition. Indirect light is cast onto the shade interiors, creating an even, ambient glow. Featured as a stand-alone or clustered in larger spaces, the Magellan is especially suitable as a dramatic focal point, available in black finishes."

A Light💡hearted Story For A Serious Lighting Partnership
[based on a true story]
Almost a year ago today, Team Synergy was lacing up orange sneakers and putting Lego kits together ahead of Lightfair. Things are different today, but what hasn’t changed is our desire to tell a different story in lighting.
“You had me at hello.”
If you remember that line from the movie Jerry Maguire, that means you are pretty old - like me! After watching Jerry Maguire and Dorothy Boyd set aside their differences to live happily ever after, we all left the movie feeling satisfied. It’s the quintessential romantic story and the script flowed just the way we expected it to flow. It goes a little something like this: boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, there is an obstacle that seems impossible to overcome, but then they realize their love is more important than anything else. It is cheesy and predictable, but we always seem to come back for more of the same story.
You may not realize it, but in the lighting industry, that classic Hollywood plot has been playing out between two manufacturers for years – and the 'happily ever after' occurred just recently.

Owner Training: Like Driving a Car Off the Lot
Earlier this year, I trained a facilities department on a lighting control system they recently purchased. We reviewed the system, I presented the Operations Manual, and they were satisfied that it was working properly. The training ended and we parted ways but I was not 100 percent convinced that the owner would remember how to access the system and make adjustments if necessary. As I drove home from the training, I thought about how I could improve my trainings to equip owners with all the tools to most efficiently operate their new lighting control system.
